Music

The National Curriculum for Music Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2

The Vision for Music at Lakeside Primary School

At Lakeside, we strive for all children to be involved, inspired and motivated by music as part of our rich and rounded curriculum. We intend to provide opportunities for listening, creating, playing and enjoying music from a range of genres.

Music at Lakeside is carefully planned, complements the National Curriculum and enables children to use their bodies to find beats and their voices, alongside other instruments, to express themselves and build their confidence in music.

Each half term, every class will have a focus song and genre which links to their learning in theme. They will have three, one-hour lessons during which they will listen and appraise, learn the history of the artist and genre as well as create and perform their own piece of music from the genre.

Music is central to the creative life of the school. Music lessons are rooted in theory but there is also a strong emphasis on performance. From Reception through to Year 6, music lessons are designed to nurture and challenge all our children to become accomplished young musicians, sharing their achievements through regular individual and group performances.

Each week, children participate in Music assemblies where they develop a range of voice and performance skills. Singing from an established repertoire, children will explore a broad and diverse range of songs and compositions that complement their wider creative curriculum.
In addition, the school has a strong extra curricular music offer. This includes opportunities for children to regularly perform as part of our choir in events such as Young Voices and carol concerts in the local area.
